FOTHERGILL AND STEIN TOP IAME CHALLENGE FINAL
Cian Fothergill and Daniel Stein were the two victorious drivers at the 2011 IAME Leopard Challenge Final, which was held in conjunction with the South Australian Karting Championships at the Monarto Karting Complex (November 25-27).
The IAME Challenge hosts one of Australia’s biggest prize pools with seven brand new IAME X30 engines up for grabs, three for the topthree (eligible) place getters in both the light and heavy categories and one given away by random draw which went to Cain Mouat. The total value of the engines was valued at $24,465.00 not to mention a host of other prizes given away including MG Tyres, Chains, sprockets and more.
Aidan Wright started strong in the Leopard Light classqualifying on top of the time sheets but it was the current Australian Champion in Fothergill who took out the opening heat while Wright was back on top inheat two.
The pre-final saw Wright again on pole but it was Fothergill who gained the ascendancy after starting on the outside front row taking the win over Wright and Kosmic driver Jake Spencer.
Fothergill who was celebrating his 23rd birthday was then shuffled back a few spots at the start of the final but the Kosmic pilot quickly recovered to take not only the lead but also the race win capping off his year with another blue plate. Wright finished second ahead of Spencer, James Sera and Leigh Nicolaou rounding out the top five with Fothergill, James Sera and Nicolaou the top three drivers eligible for the new X30 engines in the light class.
Daniel Stein was all smiles on top of the podium
“It’s great to win not only the State Championship, but also the Leopard Final,” said Fothergill.
“It’s a great way to round out the year, one that I’ve had some great success in, but none of this success would be possible without the support of MG Engines, Tracksa, Remo Racing, Kosmic Karts, Glenn Powles Designs, Eastern Creek Karts, Peter Galvin, Jammo and Kenny Bunyan.
“Monarto is a fantastic circuit and the Nationals here in 2013 will be ‘mad’, I can’t wait!”
Leopard Heavy saw a much more dominant display with Daniel Stein taking a clean sweep of the class from qualifying right through to the final.
Lee Mitchener proved best of the rest, the National Champion greeting the chequers in second place ahead of local driver Paul Pittam, Tony Gagliardi and Steven Riddell in fifth, with new engines being awarded to Stein, Mitchener and Riddell.
The event also released confirmation of a name change and with it, next year’s date for the IAME World Final which will now be known as the IAME International World Final and will be held in France on October 12with only drivers who compete in their IAME National Series eligible to enter.
